3 Have the right equipment to catch salmon. You need the right pole, line weight, and lure to catch salmon. If you’re unsure, it’s definitely worth finding a guide or someone to go with you who regularly fishes for salmon and who can point out the right gear for you.

4 Learn the art of drift fishing. You can drift fish while using a fly-fishing rod or another kind of rod. It’s basically a technique that lets your line drift along in the water. Since you’re often fishing for salmon in moving water, like streams or rivers, you cast out your line and then let it float through the water from upstream to downstream. This is an easy way to fish for salmon, and, by moving along with them, it’s a lot more natural. Then you’re more likely to get them to hit on your lure.

5 Don’t give up. Salmon fishing is not easy, but it’s such an awesome experience once you finally catch one. If you don’t succeed at first, don’t give up. You might just need a different technique or some advice from a regular angler. Or you might need to go to a different location or try a new time of year. Keep after it until you achieve it.
